Welcome to Ocean Grove Snooker Club

2025 has been both a great and tough year. The loss of three long-time players and contributing members has been hard for everyone.

However, the standard of snooker has been very high, with new B grade champion and also new doubles champions emerging.

The champion team rising from the bottom of the ladder to take out the title.

2026 will be the 50th year of the Ocean Grove Snooker Club we will be looking for new players and maybe even a Team or 2 for next season.

Please don’t forget our end of year function will be held at Memorial Reserve on Sunday 21 September commencing at 1300

Congratulations to the Warriors and thankyou to all our members with a special thankyou to Table owners and their partners for hosting us through the season.

Special thankyou to my fellow committee members that have done so much to help make this year a success.

2025 Grand Final Champions Warriors

The Wackers started proceedings with Todd Friswell and Steve Dolphin taking on Dave Kilpatrick and Peter Snell. The Wackers took the first frame 48 points to 32. The next doubles match pitted Aaron Lerpiniere-Tunn and Peter Shaw against Paul Racevic and Shaan Briggs. These two Warriors turned the tables on Aaron and Pete winning 47 to 18. Everyone was now trying to keep a cumulative points total in their head. It was 1 frame all with the Warriors ahead 79-66.

Enter the big guns, the number 1 players arrived at the table for their battle. The Wackers Aaron taking on the Warriors Raco, this battle turned out to be a really close affair, Raco took the frame 36 to 33. This put the Warriors ahead 2-1, and still leading on points 115-99.

Todd and Shaan were the next to enter the fray. Shaan couldn’t put a foot wrong, overpowering Todd and winning 62 to 19. The Warriors were now in the driver’s seat leading 3-1, but more importantly had increased their points lead, now sitting at 177-118.

They say that number 3 is a coveted position in cricket, well that is much the same in snooker. Steve had to take our newly crowned ‘B Grade Champion’ this year Peter Snell. Steve, like all good  number 3’s plied his trade skilfully taking out Snelly 49 points to 18. The frame score was 3-2, with the Warriors still leading on points 195-167.

It was now over to the pillars of each team, the number 4’s who hold everyone else up. Peter Shaw was looking to square the ledger against Dave, ensuring that the Wackers remained in the fight, and so he did, winning the match 63 to 33. The Wackers had come off life support and were now level 3 frames each, and more importantly they now lead on points 230-228. This great contest was really going down to the wire.

The reverse doubles kicked off with Todd and Steve taking on the Warriors gunn team of Raco and Shaan. The Warriors pair took out their opponents winning 73 to 31. Wrestling back the lead 4 frames to 3, but more importantly they were ahead on points 301-261.

The spectators outside around the fire pit were using fingers and toes, removing  their shoes trying to calculate figures above 20. The difference was 40 points, meaning the Warriors could lose the frame as long as the Wackers didn’t beat them by a score of 41 or more.

Aaron and Pete Shaw knew their task when they started the fight against Dave and Snelly. This match was one for the ages. The Wackers fought and fought hard to get themselves within winning range, the pink and black needed to be sunk by the Wackers for them to take the title. Unfortunately it proved a bridge too far and the Warrior pair sank the pink, thus making it impossible for the Wackers. The teams called it a night shaking hands.

The Warriors in titanic battle won, showing true warrior spirit becoming Ocean Grove Snooker Legends for 2025. Congratulations to all the Warrior players Neil Fuller (Team Captain/Table Owner), Paul Racevic, Shaan Briggs, Dave Kilpatrick, Peter Snell and Peter Clark. Well done on a fabulous year.

Snooker Championship Finals 2025

An evening of close games and camaraderie

The snooker championship finals on June 4, 2025, were a remarkable event, with a lively turnout of 42 members celebrated for their support of the players and the club. Special thanks were extended to Dean and Lisa for hosting the event, providing food, and keeping drinks chilled, as well as Todd for his organization and supply efforts. Gratitude was also expressed to members who handled refereeing and scoring, as well as table owners who made their tables available for the run-up games. The evening included three matches:

Doubles Match

Harry Hanley and Hamish Hanley faced Pat Wools and Bruce Barley in an intense game that swung back and forth. After a tight first frame, Bruce’s 22-point break secured a win for his team. The second frame saw Hamish’s impressive shots stir excitement, culminating with Harry finishing strong to tie the match.

Well now for the deciding frame, so tight and every one had a hand in potting some great balls but we were into the final 2 balls with the Hanley crew 13 points up, Harry had a shot on the pink and it sat in the pocket enabling Pat to sink that and then sink the black, so after 3 frames we are square. There is again a coin thrown into the air and the Hanley’s win the toss and send in Pat and Bruce, after some discussion Pat said to Bruce I will play it safe and asked Bruce what he will do and Bruce stated I will have a go, so that was the decision.

Well Bruce had a go at cutting but missed on the way down but belted the black on the way back off the cushion sending the black around the table and as fate sometimes works it went around the table settling into the pocket just before running out of steam the crowd were ecstatic with the excitement of a close game.

Sad finish for the Harry and Hamish after playing so well, but Pat and Bruce were very excited.

The second frame showcased focused play, with Ron nearly gaining momentum before Peter’s dominance on the large colours sealed the win.

Before the final game we remembered Peter Kleindienst, Klinga for the contribution he made to our club with a minutes silence, he is greatly missed.

A Grade Singles Final

Glenn Smith played against Rob Holt in a tightly contested match. The first frame featured calculated shots, with Rob emerging victorious by capitalizing on high colours. In the second frame, Rob demonstrated his experience as a five-time event winner by putting together strong plays, while Glenn, despite a valiant effort, faced costly fouls. Rob claimed victory, while Glenn was commended for reaching his first Grand Final.

Overall, it was a fantastic night filled with exciting snooker matches and heartfelt camaraderie, with appreciation for everyone who contributed to the event’s success.
