THE BANDITS
As near as I can recall the Bandits joined the competition in 1978. Our table was at Les Lawrences' home in Blackwell Street, hence the name "Blackwell Bandits". Original team members were Les Lawrence, Graeme Glover, Rob Merritt and Brian Mums.
We were Premiers in 1979,1980 and 1981 and Jim Bartle joined the team during this period. No other team has yet equalled our three consecutive Premiership wins. The Bandits also won a knockabout competition in 1980. We were Premiership runners-up in 1-982 and 1986 and were again Premiers in 1992 and1993.
Jim Bartle and I won the Doubles Championship in 1981 and again in 1984.
I also won the Singles Championship in 1984.
Les Lawrence moved to Nyah West to try his luck at\grape growing. His table went temporarily to Rob Merritts' home in Watkins Street and we played there until Les relocated his table to Nyah West.
This table was then purchased by John Andrews of the Kestrels. We then moved to our present location at John and Judy Ballads' home in Sandpiper Court (formerly Wilkinson St).
Current team members are John Haxby, John Ballard, Craig Ballard, Mark Ballard, David Barbey and Brian Munns.
Other members have been Roger Wynn, Ray Pickering, George Hubbard, John Babb, Ron Menzies and AlanDavis.
It is hard to believe that the snooker club has been going for 20 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition for some18 years and I am sure other past and present members of the Bandits team have also enjoyed their snooker.
The Bandits congratulate the past and present executives of the club for keeping the competition going so strongly for such a long time. We sincerely hope the Ocean Grove Snooker Club will continue for many years to come.
