THE WARRIORS
The Warriors were formed by Bill Grigg in 1977 after Lionel Rogersons team the Gremlins of which Bill and Donald were a part, were forced to dispand due to Lionels wifes illness. Bill set the table up in the coolstore next to his home in Wallington. It was a great venue lined with packing crates marked PRODUCE OF OCCUPIED JAPAN. As it was away from the house it was a bit more rowdy than some. It was not unusual after the game for Bill to suggest that maybe a game of matchbox would be in order, so out would come the two bobs and into it, these games would go on until the small hours. We played at the coolstore for approximately 20years until Bill sold the property. He bought a house in Shell road and promptly added a snooker room, this became our base for the next 10 years or so.
The Warriors have been a reasonably competitive and successful team, more often than not making the finals ( with the exception of the year Bill decided to take most of the season off travelling to central Australia). Led by Bill who won 4 singles championships we found our first premiership allusive, Achieving our first in 1984. Bill by chance found a new perspective player Bruce Michell on the golf course. Bruce quickly became the new leading player , he also won 4 singles championships and led our team through a successful period.
We still have 4 team members who have members for 38 years or more, including Don Grigg who is the last of the players who played in the inaugural year to be still competing.
Our future as a team is looking good with the infusion of team Purdie. Rick, who is a third generation OGSC player ( grandson of John Andrews who was a foundation member and son of Dave ) has taken over the leading player role and has a very bright future in the comp.
